What To Expect When You Call For A Tow

Posted on

When your car or truck breaks down, and you need to have a towing service come and take it to a garage for you, you need to know what is expected and how the process works. Being prepared when the driver arrives can make the entire situation easier and less stressful for you.

Finding a Tow Company

The first thing you are going to need to do is to find a towing service that is available in the area. The internet is a great resource, and since most phones and mobile devices now include a web browser, you can use your phone to search for a tow company nearby. Once you find a few options, give them a call and see if they are available to come and assist you with your breakdown.

If you have a membership in an auto club or roadside assistance program, you can call them directly, and they will find a nearby company and work with your roadside assistance plan. Free towing is often a benefit of these plans, so it is essential that you find a company that can bill the tow to the roadside club and not to you directly.

Towing Your Vehicle

When the towing service arrives, they may be able to help you get the car running again, but if they cant, you will need to let them know where you want the vehicle towed to and then discuss the fee. If the car is going to a local repair shop and your towing service is covered by insurance or roadside assistance, you will not need to pay anything at the time of the tow.

If you do not have coverage for towing, ask the dispatcher what the cost of the tow is going to be so that you can pay the driver when they arrive. Some services will bill your credit card over the phone before sending the truck out, while others ask that you pay the driver at the time of the service.

Transportation Home

Some towing services will let you ride to the garage in the truck, while others will not. Make sure you ask about that so that you can call for a ride if you need to before the towing service arrives. If you can ride with the tow truck driver, you may still need a ride home from the shop, but at least the driver is not leaving you alone in a parking lot somewhere.

If you are having the car towed home to fix it yourself, riding with the towing service solves the transportation issue completely.
